Two-tone construction is what makes a dark garment readable. Black is the highest-volume colour in men’s underwear and the hardest to merchandise — hang six black jocks on a rail and the customer sees one shape repeated six times. The grey front panel holds the outline of the pouch and the seam lines against the dark body, so the construction stays visible on a fixture, in a flat lay, and at thumbnail size online.

That is the practical case for the two-tone across the whole range. The contrast is not there to be loud; it is there so the garment still reads as a designed object at the point where most underwear stops reading as anything at all.
